Presidential candidate Iliana Iotova said at a campaign meeting in Samokov on Friday that she would not change her convictions for political advantage.
“I do not change my convictions simply because the political climate suggests what would be better or more advantageous for me. I owe much of my development, both as a politician and as a person, to my work in the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the positions I have held,” Iotova said. She attended the meeting alongside vice-presidential candidate Kiril Valchev.
Iotova thanked her colleagues from Progressive Bulgaria for attending and noted that BSP, Bulgaria’s oldest party, had also backed her presidential bid.
“I am running because I firmly believe that all of us, every Bulgarian woman and man and all our institutions, can come together as one and move in the same direction, as our ancestors urged us to do,” Iotova said. She added that the worst mistake would be for everyone to be the same and think alike. However, the presidency, the government, the parliamentary majority, all patriotic Bulgarians in the National Assembly and the judiciary should move in the same direction.
“I am running because I believe institutions should cooperate. However different their powers, they must find common ground that serves the interests of all Bulgarians, rather than sabotage one another,” Iotova said.
She said she would do everything within her power, with the help of many other patriots in Bulgaria, to ensure that Samokov Monastery is restored.
