Republicans are reportedly growing more alarmed about Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign in Texas, with one GOP strategist calling the race a “slow-moving car crash” as the party pours staggering sums of money into trying to keep the seat red.
According to a Saturday Politico report, senior Republicans have privately ramped up pressure on President Donald Trump’s team to devote more resources to Texas, where Paxton is locked in a tight race against Democrat James Talarico.

“It’s a five-alarm fire, no doubt,” one Republican senator told the outlet. “Can we put it out? I hope so.”
A GOP strategist in Texas offered an even more dire assessment.
“This is a slow-moving car crash that we’re witnessing right now,” the strategist said. “And there’s a 75% chance that the ultimate result here will be catastrophic from a GOP Senate majority standpoint.”
Republican outside groups are already spending heavily, Politico explained. The Senate Leadership Fund dropped another $60 million into the state Wednesday, bringing its total spending there to $131 million, while a Trump operative told the outlet that MAGA Inc. and affiliated groups plan to spend nearly $45 million through Oct. 12.

All outside GOP spending aimed at helping Paxton is on pace to surpass $200 million, with the candidate’s campaign having separately announced a $20 million ad buy of its own.
The enormous price tag has reportedly fueled concerns that Texas could siphon resources away from other important states, including Michigan and New Hampshire.

Making matters worse for Republicans has been Paxton himself.
After audio surfaced of Paxton admitting that “everybody’s numbers dropped” following Trump’s midterm convention in Dallas, one Republican senator told Politico the campaign appeared to lack direction.

“There seems to be very little strategy there,” the senator said. “Sometimes, I think [Paxton] wants to lose.”
While Trump attempted to tout Paxton’s work as the state’s attorney general during a Texas appearance Thursday, he still ended up telling supporters, “Ken Paxton was at my side more than anybody, and I have to always remember that because he can be a pain in the a*s sometimes. I’ll be honest.”

CNN data analyst Harry Enten noted Thursday that Paxton’s net favorability stood at minus-16 points, which he said made Paxton the least popular Texas Republican Senate nominee this century.
The president is scheduled to return to the state again next week.
