Bulgaria remains open to talks with North Macedonia without ultimatums or departures from European Union policy, President Iliana Iotova told journalists on Saturday.
“Bulgaria is a full member of the European Union, and we cannot allow a country on the path to EU membership to reject the EU’s values and virtues,” Iotova said. She was attending commemorations marking the 114th anniversary of the liberation of Gorna Dzhumaya, now Blagoevgrad. She was responding to a question about a diplomatic note in which North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski proposed a bilateral meeting of the two countries’ foreign ministers, following advice from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“This is not the first time the government of North Macedonia has received advice from such a senior figure in the EU. I still do not know the details of the private meeting between Mickoski and von der Leyen. I very much hope that she was extremely firm this time,” Iotova said. She added that a report on North Macedonia’s progress towards EU accession would be published within two weeks for consideration by the European Commission.
For the talks to be meaningful, Mickoski needed to read the EU’s enlargement policy towards North Macedonia carefully and stop treating the issue as bilateral, Iotova added. “I would also like Iva Mihaylova’s case to be resolved first, as we have raised it with the highest possible European and international institutions,” she said.
Iotova questioned the initiative’s sincerity. She said she was now in the third month of waiting for a reply to the letter she had personally sent to North Macedonia’s President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova about Mihaylova’s case.
“Let us remain cautiously optimistic. I will speak to our Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova. I want to see the exact text of the note and how it is worded,” Iotova said.
