October 5, Word Teachers’ Day, is marked in Bulgaria and more than 100 countries worldwide. In Bulgaria, the day has been marked since 2006, following a Council of Ministers decision of September 29 that year.
UNESCO has marked World Teachers’ Day since 1994 to honour the contribution of teachers to the development of society.
The day commemorates the anniversary of the signing in 1966 of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers by UNESCO and the International Labour Organization.
More than 92,000 teaching professionals work in Bulgaria’s education system, including over 20,000 in kindergartens. One positive trend in recent years has been the growing number of young people entering the profession: nearly one in five teaching professionals is now aged 35 or under, the Ministry of Education and Science said at the start of the 2026/2027 school year.
