The National Security Advisory Council (NSAC) began a meeting at the President’s administration on Wednesday to discuss risks to the country’s maritime security and critical infrastructure.
The meeting will focus on current risks and threats to Bulgaria’s maritime security and critical infrastructure in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Participants arriving for the meeting included National Assembly Chair Michaela Dotsova, Prime Minister Rumen Radev, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev, Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov, Secretary of the Council of Ministers’ Security Council Plamen Uzunov, State Agency for National Security (SANS) Chair Plamen Tonchev, Continue the Change Floor Leader Nikolay Denkov, Vazrazhdane Floor Leader Kostadin Kostadinov, Progressive Bulgaria Floor Leader Petar Vitanov, GERB-UDF Floor Leader Boyko Borissov, Democratic Bulgaria MP Ivaylo Mirchev and Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) MP Stanislav Anastasov.
The participants made no comments to the media as they entered the President’s administration.
President Iliana Iotova said she would convene the council after two merchant ships were attacked by naval and aerial drones on Tuesday in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, about 70 nautical miles east of Byala.
Radev said on Tuesday at a meeting with institutional representatives at the Council of Ministers that the ships had been attacked by naval and aerial drones around 3 a.m. One of the ships, flying the Togolese flag, sank. No seafarers from the sunken vessel have been found, and the search and rescue operation has been called off, Emergency Rescue Operations Directorate Head Rumen Nikolov of the Maritime Administration Executive Agency said on Wednesday. The second ship sustained damage and caught fire; its crew was evacuated.
