The European Maritime Safety Agency is providing support to the authorities in Bulgaria and Romania, a European Commission Spokesperson said here on Wednesday at a press conference in response to questions about recent drone strikes on commercial vessels in the Black Sea.
“At the request of both countries, we are providing satellite imagery to enhance situational awareness following the attacks, and we are following the situation closely,” the Spokesperson said. “These latest attacks on the commercial ships in the Black Sea […] are completely unacceptable. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is also seen in the Black Sea and poses serious threats to maritime security and freedom of navigation. Russia must cease all actions that endanger international shipping and the lives of seafarers as well to return to compliance to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.”
The Spokesperson added that the European Maritime Safety Agency had offered its support to the Romanian and Bulgarian authorities in line with its role in providing European-level maritime safety and situational awareness support. “Both Romania and Bulgaria requested satellite imagery to enhance situational awareness following the attacks and we are currently delivering the shots. So we are following also in this context closely,” the Spokesperson said.
Bulgaria and Romania play a crucial role in defending the eastern flank, the Spokesperson said, noting that the two countries have received a combined EUR 20 billion under the SAFE programme for defence projects. “Both countries have already received pre-financing from the European Commission, half a billion for Bulgaria, 2.5 billion for Romania,” the spokesperson said.
Asked where the investments would go, the Spokesperson said this was a matter for the national authorities. “We never communicate on this and I will not do it on this occasion,” the Spokesperson said.
The Spokesperson recalled that both countries had also committed to take part in five European Defence Projects of Common European Interest (EDPCIs) put forward by the European Commission. These include projects related to space, drone and counter-drone systems, as well as the Eastern Flank Watch initiative.
“This gives an indication definitely of where the focus is for these two countries and rightly so,” the Spokesperson said.
