The bomb threats targeting Bulgarian institutions may be part of hybrid operations aimed at testing the authorities’ readiness to respond, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said during question time in Parliament here on Friday.
Since June 2026, hundreds of threatening emails have been sent to Bulgarian institutions, including courts, universities, kindergartens and ports, Demerdzhiev said. Investigators have established that the threats were sent through compromised email accounts using platforms in Italy, the UK, Lebanon, Brazil and Argentina, as well as a free Swiss anonymizing email service. Translation software appears to have been used to prepare the messages, which may indicate that they were not generated by Bulgarian nationals, he added.
Inquiries have been sent to email service providers, but the actual source of the messages could not be identified because of the anonymizing services used, the Minister said.
Bulgaria has also contacted partner security services, as institutions in Balkan and other European countries were targeted during the same period. The Interior Ministry is investigating two main possibilities: different types of hybrid attacks or an attempt to spread chaos at specific moments, Demerdzhiev said.
He pointed to a pattern of threats escalating at certain times. Their number rose sharply on July 3, 7 and 8, following Demerdzhiev’s July 2 parliamentary hearing on alleged irregularities in crash barrier procurement and information about flights by MRF leader Delyan Peevski, he said. Demerdzhiev added that a similar increase had been observed last week and this week, which he linked to his parliamentary hearings.
