There is no cause for concern over grain trade in the Black Sea, and no vessels travelling to or from Bulgaria have been turned away, Agriculture and Food Minister Plamen Abrovsky told journalists here on Friday.
He said he was confident the situation remained calm, following communication with the head of the National Association of Grain Producers.
“We have no information indicating any problems. For the time being, the situation at the [Bulgarian Black Sea] ports of Varna and Burgas is calm,” Abrovsky said. He added that there was no need for emergency measures concerning trade in the Black Sea.
Commenting on difficulties faced by grape growers in marketing their produce, the Minister said a support package had already been prepared.
Purchases of grapes had begun in the southeastern regions of Haskovo and Svilengrad and, as far as he understood, the issue was one of price rather than demand, Abrovsky said.
He stressed that the State could not intervene in price-setting, as Bulgaria had a market economy.
Abrovsky is due to take part in a discussion forum entitled “The Future of Bulgarian Agriculture – Policies, Competitiveness and Sustainability”, held as part of the “Gifts of Thrace” agricultural exhibition.
