In a message on Doctors’ Day, Health Minister Katya Ivkova said being a doctor is much more than a professional choice: “it is a mission that combines the power of medical science with compassion, always placing the individual at the centre”. The Minister’s message to medical professionals is published on the website of the Ministry of Health on the occasion of the feast day of St John of Rila, the Bulgarian Medical Association marks Bulgarian Doctors’ Day.
Being a doctor is a vocation that requires not only extensive knowledge and skills, but also the ability to inspire hope in difficult times, provide reassurance in moments of uncertainty, and face challenges with understanding and a sense of responsibility, Minister Ivkova added. For 31 years, this celebration has been an expression of public gratitude for your noble work and dedication to safeguarding what is most precious – human life. It is no coincidence that your professional celebration is associated with the name of St John of Rila. His spiritual legacy of humility and compassion for others serves as a reminder of the moral foundations of the medical profession, which help you overcome difficulties, continue to develop professionally and seek bold, innovative solutions for the benefit of patients, she said.
Minister Ivkova expressed her conviction that supporting those dedicated to the nation’s health was a shared responsibility. Respect for your work, decent working conditions and opportunities for professional development are key to building a strong and resilient healthcare system in which professionalism goes hand in hand with trust and a humane approach, she said.
She wished doctors good health, strength and fulfilment in the noble mission to which they have dedicated their lives. May the gratitude of the people remind you that your work makes a difference and that your humanity leaves a mark that cannot be measured in words, Minister Ivkova said in her message.
On Monday, the Bulgarian Medical Association marks the 125th anniversary of its establishment. Monday evening, the professional organization will hold its traditional Doctor of the Year awards ceremony, with the award to be presented by President Iliana Iotova. Bulgarian Doctors’ Day has been observed on this date since 1996.
