Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East during a meeting in Sofia on Monday, agreeing that resolving them required active diplomatic efforts, the President’s Press Secretariat said.
“We are living in a time with more conflicts than at any point since the Second World War. Today’s world needs more trust and responsibility. We must leave our children a secure world in which they can develop their potential,” Iotova said, as quoted by her Press Secretariat.
She also highlighted the negative effects of wars on national economies and social systems.
Wang recalled Iotova’s address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, which focused on peace and the importance of dialogue in overcoming differences between countries.
The two also discussed prospects for strengthening bilateral cooperation between Bulgaria and China.
Iotova highlighted the longstanding relations between the two countries, describing them as based on mutual trust and friendship.
Both sides agreed that the joint declaration establishing a strategic partnership, signed by then Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2019, had given fresh impetus to bilateral relations, the Press Secretariat said.
Iotova and Wang identified opportunities to deepen cooperation in the economy, trade, education and culture.
The Chinese Foreign Minister described his meeting with Iotova as a demonstration of the friendship between the two countries.
According to Wang, the formation of a regular Bulgarian government following the April parliamentary elections provided a stable foundation for strengthening the strategic partnership and accelerating the implementation of joint projects already under way.
He also thanked Iotova for her consistent support for the development of Bulgarian-Chinese relations.
During the meeting, Iotova raised the possibility of establishing a direct air service between Sofia and Beijing, saying it would help strengthen business contacts and cultural ties.
The Bulgarian side also expressed hope that Bulgarian agricultural products would gain easier access to the Chinese market.
Earlier on Monday, Wang met Prime Minister Rumen Radev. He is scheduled to hold talks with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova later in the day.
