Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova told the Bulgarian National Television on Tuesday that Bulgaria’s position on the war in Ukraine overlaps “almost entirely” with Hungary’s. “The end of the war must be based on parameters clearly agreed through diplomatic channels between the Ukrainian and Russian sides. The two parties that will determine how peace is achieved are the two warring sides,” Petrova added. If Europe does not take part in the negotiations, it will find it very difficult to ensure that the war ends favourably for it, she said.
Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orban said that Hungary was fully in solidarity with Bulgaria over the attacks in the Black Sea. Regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine, Orban said that both Romania and Bulgaria wanted a just and lasting peace. “Our positions are also similar in that we do not want to send weapons to Ukraine,” she added. Orban also said that Hungary is committed to the merit-based process of EU accession.
Diplomatic efforts should continue towards a mutual decision by all Black Sea countries to halt all types of military action, Petrova stressed. The attacks, which continue to occur not only in Bulgarian waters, create a sense that commercial vessels have become part of the battlefield, which is absolutely unacceptable, she said. The Foreign Minister added that, within NATO, the Defence Ministry was holding active discussions in partnership with Romania to ensure that the necessary equipment was available to protect the Black Sea.
Asked about the protests in France, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister said that the developments there were the result of deep polarisation in society, which was being exploited by extremist political forces. The difficulty was that such divisions were not confined to France and were always damaging, Petrova said, adding that when people wanted change, it should come through elections. “I hope that any kind of discontent will be channelled into a political choice,” she said.
“We stand in solidarity with France and hope that it will bring the situation under control as quickly as possible,” the Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister said.
Asked about the European integration of the Republic of North Macedonia, Petrova said that the key issue was political will and whether there was a genuine willingness to move forward with the country’s accession process. Four years after the adoption of the common European consensus, the authorities in North Macedonia had failed to find the political will to move forward and implement the necessary reforms, the Foreign Minister added.
