Japanese calligrapher and ink painter Mitsuru Nagata held demonstrations and workshops on Tuesday as part of the 37th Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria.
The event was organized by the Japanese Embassy and Kokoro Japanese Cultural Centre.
During three sessions at Radio Varna’s concert hall, Nagata traced the 3,300-year history of the Chinese characters used in Japanese, known as kanji, and demonstrated different calligraphy styles. He also presented traditional tools for shodo (calligraphy) and sumi-e (ink painting), including horsehair brushes, paper and solid sumi ink sticks made from soot bound with animal glue. The sticks are ground with water before use.
Participants learned to prepare their own ink. Nagata said the Japanese city of Nara produced more than 90% of Japan’s ink materials. He called for greater support for traditional crafts, warning that these skills were declining as more people sought office jobs.
