Presidential Candidate Gurov Calls for Presidency to Hold Executive to Account 2026

Presidential candidate Andrey Gurov called on Tuesday for a proactive, transparent and independent presidency that uses its powers to hold the executive to account.
Speaking in Ruse, Gurov said he saw hope among the public for a new direction in the way the country is governed.
“It should not merely echo the executive but act as a real check on it,” Gurov said. The presidency should take an active part in public debate and work in citizens’ interests, he added.
Gurov identified citizens’ security and addressing the consequences of a looming economic crisis as key priorities. Decisive action was needed to give families peace of mind, ensure income security and create better conditions for investment, he said.
Healthcare and education should also be central to a long-term public debate, Gurov said. The country needed to set development goals and build consensus around them. The presidency should act as a balancing force, supporting the government when it was moving in the right direction and drawing attention to departures from established policies and goals, he added.
Gurov met reporters in Ruse before laying a wreath at the Monument of Liberty. He is due to meet members of the public at the Ruse State Opera on Tuesday evening.
