Presidential Candidate Hristanov: Black Sea Developments Must Prompt Bulgaria to Seek EU Funding 2026

Presidential candidate Ivan Hristanov told potential voters here on Tuesday that because of the events unfolding in the Black Sea, Bulgaria and Romania must urgently request financial support from the EU. He pointed out that insurance premiums for tankers and ships entering the Black Sea have skyrocketed, and given the economic losses both countries are suffering, Europe should show solidarity.
Hristanov said that Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkiye, together with NATO forces, must establish a “blue corridor” and guarantee the safety of commercial vessels. He added that this year’s agricultural harvest in Bulgaria is excellent, but there are no exports, because the Black Sea is blocked, which also hinders imports. Hristanov warned that these issues are not being discussed by the political parties. He concluded that when Bulgaria is under economic attack, there must be national unity and solutions.
Commenting on the ongoing presidential campaign, Hristanov described it as lacklustre and expressed regret that many of the candidates have resorted to mudslinging. “We have completely distanced ourselves from this behaviour. We consider it undignified, because we must preserve the dignity and authority of the presidential office,” he stated and added that the new president should not come from the ranks of either the liberals or the nationalists.
