Bulgarian Air Force crews flying F-16, MiG-29, Su-25 and L-39 aircraft are conducting patrol, surveillance and reconnaissance missions over Bulgaria’s territorial waters in the Black Sea, the Defence Ministry press service said Wednesday.
The missions aim to improve situational awareness and security in Bulgarian airspace and maritime areas. Flights will continue over the coming days. Additional ground-based surveillance and air defence assets have also been deployed to reinforce airspace protection, the ministry said.
Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said Bulgarian military aviation would be activated much more frequently along the Black Sea coast, with operations extending into territorial waters.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said a US P-8 Poseidon aircraft had begun patrolling the Black Sea to gather intelligence and detect potentially threatening activity.
NATO has also announced plans to deploy additional maritime surveillance aircraft, radar systems and drones in the Black Sea following a series of drone attacks on vessels in the region linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine, Reuters reported. At least five more cargo ships were hit near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria over the past 10 days, with at least 23 sailors reported missing or dead.
