Businessman and Bulgarian Taekwondo Federation Chair Slavi Binev has been shot at his home in Sofia, acting Interior Ministry Secretary General Lyubomir Nikolov told reporters on Saturday.
Three people have been detained in connection with the murder, Nikolov said. They were arrested near the Trayanovi Vrata tunnel on the Trakia motorway.
Two people with Turkish names and one holding a Bulgarian identity card have been arrested. Two firearms were recovered, Nikolov added. One of the weapons was thrown out of the car just as it came to a stop. The other was found in one of the suspects’ bags. According to initial reports, it was legally owned, Nikolov said.
There is also a witness who saw three people entering and leaving the scene of the incident. The witness also heard a gunshot. The suspects were involved in the construction industry. They own a construction company and are currently building two residential areas in Sofia.
The deceased sustained a gunshot wound to the head. A fired cartridge was found at the scene.
Earlier on Saturday, the Interior Ministry’s press service told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) it had received a report of a man shot in Sofia. Police teams were dispatched at the scene and the report is being investigated, the Interior Ministry added. Initially, the exact location of the incident was not specified.
The Interior Minister Secretary General told journalists that, based on the evidence gathered so far, the incident cannot be classified as a contract killing. “When entering and leaving, these people did not hide either their faces or the car they arrived in,” he said, adding that there is evidence to suggest that the three detainees and the victim knew one another. According to him, the incident was likely caused by unresolved financial disputes.
Sofia Police Director Chief Commissioner Nikolay Peltekov said that the case file would most likely be submitted to the prosecution by the police on Sunday, as a significant amount of investigative work still needs to be carried out.
