Poetry Is Thriving in a World Where Everything Seems to Be Falling Apart, Poet Kristin Dimitrova Says

“Poetry is thriving in a world where everything seems to be falling apart,” poet Kristin Dimitrova said in an interview with BTA. Dimitrova, who served on the jury of the Veselin Hanchev National Poetry Competition for the first time, said she was encouraged by the work she read by young writers. At the same time, she voiced concern about differences in the quality of education received by children in different cities across Bulgaria.
“There are no stupid children, only bad teachers. And not all cities in Bulgaria provide children with the same level of learning,” Dimitrova said. She explained that some participants were keen to write but had misconceptions about what a poem should look like. Some of the works contained clichéd images and expressions that the young writers regarded as poetic, she noted.
However, the poet emphasized that there were also many talented young people among the participants. “The strong poems were very strong indeed. They all had completely different identities. Clearly, the children had also been lucky enough to have the right families, teachers and everything else,” Dimitrova concluded.
Dimitrova commented on the growing role of artificial intelligence in everyday life. She said people risk gradually turning from masters of technology into its servants. “At the moment, artificial intelligence has not taken over us; it serves us very well. It takes care of all our worries and obligations and makes the hardest decision in life for us – choosing,” she said. Dimitrova warned that when technology begins making decisions on people’s behalf, it may also impose its own ideas of what matters.
She stressed the importance of independent thinking and people’s right to make mistakes. “If someone is much better than us, they still cannot make our beautiful mistakes. There is charm in making mistakes, too. We do not need to be perfect in a mechanical way and constantly consult another mind,” the poet said.
In Stara Zagora, the host city of the Veselin Hanchev Competition, Dimitrova presented her latest poetry collection, Kvartalna antropologiya (Neighbourhood Anthropology). Many of the poems in the book explore virtual connectedness and the physical loneliness of modern people. “There are more and more places where people gather and supposedly spend time together – they have fun, and at that very moment each of them is filming themselves, filming the others and sending pictures,” the poet said.
Another major theme in the book is the feeling of helplessness in the face of historical events. According to Dimitrova, although people cannot significantly influence what is happening, they can at least try to preserve themselves.
