Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov met with Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Orban in Budapest on Saturday, towards the close of Hristov’s three-day visit to the Hungarian capital for commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the government press service in Sofia reported.
Hristov’s talks with Orban covered current bilateral, European and international issues and opportunities to further deepen cooperation between Bulgaria and Hungary.
Orban described the current week as “Bulgaria Week”, referring to several days of intensive political dialogue between the two countries and her official visit to Sofia on October 19, marking the 10th anniversary of the designation of that date as Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day. She expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and excellent organization of her visit, highlighting the productive talks she held with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova on a wide range of bilateral and international issues.
Hristov emphasized the historical significance of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and its role as a symbol of the pursuit of freedom and democracy. He noted that the events which took place in Hungary 70 years ago served as an inspiration for subsequent democratic movements and struggles for freedom in Europe.
The talks focused primarily on current domestic political developments in Bulgaria and Hungary and on challenges to security and stability at regional and international level. The two deputy prime ministers exchanged views on the priorities of their new governments, highlighting similarities in the tasks facing them.
They expressed satisfaction with the traditionally excellent relations between Bulgaria and Hungary, based on friendship and mutual trust, noting that there are no outstanding issues on the bilateral agenda. Hristov and Orban reaffirmed their readiness to maintain active political dialogue and further deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, energy, connectivity and tourism. They specifically confirmed both countries’ interest in developing the Vertical Gas Corridor.
Particular attention was paid to the current security environment in Europe and the Black Sea region. Bulgaria and Hungary were noted to hold similar positions on a number of European agenda issues, and both sides confirmed their shared readiness to strengthen cooperation within the alliances to which they belong, in the interests of European stability.
In conclusion, the sides expressed their readiness to maintain high-level political contacts and make full use of the potential for further developing the Bulgarian-Hungarian partnership.
