Bulgarian Prime Minister Roumen Radev congratulated President Iliana Yotova on October 26 “for maintaining her dignity and refusing to engage in the extremely negative campaign that was relentlessly directed against her” in the country’s presidential elections, set to go to a second round on November 1.

At the same time, Radev hit out at Yotova’s rival in the second round, former prime minister Andrei Gyurov, seeking to link him to the “assemblage”, a previous informal governing coalition involving reformist parties along with Boiko Borissov and Delyan Peevski.

According to the Central Electoral Commission on October 26, with ballots from 99.95 per cent of precincts counted, Yotova, nominated by an initiative committee and endorsed by Radev’s ruling Progressive Bulgaria party, received 34.759 per cent of the votes.

Gyurov, similarly nominated by an initiative committee and endorsed by pro-Western opposition We Continue the Change (WCC) and Democratic Bulgaria (DB) parliamentary groups, was second with 32.953 per cent.

Radev told reporters: “All elections are important. There is no such thing as an unimportant election. Let us consign this assemblage to oblivion this Sunday. Let us vote for Iliyana Yotova, so that Bulgaria may remain in safe hands”.

According to Radev, the presidential election has sent a deeply concerning signal to society as a whole.

“This is because WCC, DB, Peevski, and GERB crippled the constitution and led many people to believe that voting in this election was pointless. Others, meanwhile, were led to believe that the outcome was a foregone conclusion, so they simply stayed away. There was insufficient mobilisation,” Radev said.

Currently, all indications are the first-round vote in the presidential elections on October 25 saw record low turnout not only in a presidential election in Bulgaria, but also all previous elections since the country became a democracy 36 years ago.

“For the architects of this assemblage, this election is a life-or-death struggle. It is a battle for survival,” Radev said.

He said that these parties “are attempting to drag Bulgaria backward, rather than allowing the country to move forward in its development”.

“They wouldn’t hesitate to drag us into the war. Gyurov himself signed the military agreement with Ukraine without a mandate, and now they don’t even shy away from openly forming a new assemblage just to exact this revenge,” Radev said.

“Gyurov himself threw himself into the line of fire to defend Peevski when the arrests of Peevski’s mayors began—mayors who are clearly compromised. He even likened it to the ‘Revival Process.’ This was an overt defence of Peevski,” he said.

The “Revival Process” to which Radev was referring was the repression of Bulgarians of Turkish ethnicity by the regime during Bulgaria’s late communist era.

Regarding the low voter turnout in the first round, Radev said that many voters had seen the opinion polls before the vote and believed that the outcome was already a foregone conclusion.

“On one side, there was maximum mobilisation, while on the other, there was complacency. I believe this complacency will vanish in the second round, and we will see a higher voter turnout,” he said.

“In Sunday’s elections, we will be choosing between peace and war, between democracy and the corrupt model of this ‘coalition,’ between the calm truth and the hysteria of the trolls,” Radev said. I

“I believe every sensible person understands this, but it must be expressed at the ballot box. Because, I repeat, for the architects of this ‘assemblage,’ this is a life-or-death struggle—a fight to protect and conceal their corruption and their ill-gotten gains,” he said.
