Balgarianovinite.com Students, part of the university blockades in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, announced with a post on Instagram a new protest in the city on January 17.
“Snow is falling, the regime is shaking, and we are preparing for January 17 in Novi Sad,” the students wrote.
In an accompanying video, the students said that their movement is entering a new phase following the tragedy of November 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy at the Novi Sad railway station collapsed, killing 16 people and seriously injuring one.
“But let’s go back for a moment to the beginning. We, the students, had no idea what to expect when we embarked on this struggle. From that moment on, we built unity. In the blockade, in moments of joy, and in times of difficulty. We did not divide, we built unity. Through effort and hard work, we earned trust, and the energy accumulated throughout 2025 is now taking on new form. What follows is the substantiation of our struggle,” the students said in the video.
Following the Novi Sad tragedy, protests by citizens and political activists began, while students blocked more than 60 faculties across the country. The protests, which have been ongoing for more than a year and are led by students, have turned into mass demonstrations centred on anti-corruption demands, calling for those responsible to face both political and judicial accountability.
On May 5, the students for the first time called for early parliamentary elections, a demand that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic refused to accept.
On December 28, students collected around 400,000 signatures in a single day nationwide, in support of holding new elections.
