About 45% of workers in the European Union report exposure to psychosocial risks at work, Labour and Social Policy Minister Nataliya Efremova said at the opening of a conference titled “Prevention of Psychosocial Risks at the Workplace”, the Ministry said on Monday.
The conference was organized by the Labour and Social Policy Ministry as part of European Week for Safety and Health at Work, held this year under the motto “Together for Mental Health at Work”. Health Minister Katya Ivkova also took part.
Efremova said more than 12 billion working days are lost globally each year because of depression and anxiety linked to adverse working conditions. Psychosocial risks, she said, are not only a personal issue for affected workers and their families but also create serious economic and social consequences, including more workplace accidents, higher sickness absence, lower productivity and earlier withdrawal from the labour market.
Mental health risks affect workers most seriously in sectors with high demands, constant communication and responsibility for other people, including healthcare, education, social services and industry, Efremova said.
She stressed that the issue should be discussed not only during European Week for Safety and Health at Work but continuously, with measures developed and implemented to improve workers’ wellbeing. Employees should be able to speak openly at work about their concerns, she added, pointing to social dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders as key to effective occupational safety and health policies.
Efremova said rapid digitalization, the introduction of artificial intelligence, remote work and constant connectivity between workers and employers are creating growing psychosocial risks in the workplace. These risks negatively affect both people’s ability to work and their motivation, she added.
