The Florida Primary election delivered some beyond-curious activity by Democrats in the deep-red state. Alexander Vindman, the poster man for anti-Trump opposition for years, was handed a sound defeat in his bid for a Senate seat in D.C. It was one of many head-scratching moves by Democrats in the Sunshine State.
That Vindman was even running in the state was itself an odd decision. The man’s entire existence is wrapped around his battles with the president, so running in the state where Donald Trump still holds sizeable support made little sense, but that is on brand for the man. He has been a media darling over the years, but he has garnered little interest with voters.
The nomination he was vying for is the Senate seat formerly held by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. His role has been filled by Ashley Moody, appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis, and she is running on the GOP ticket to retain that seat. It is a monumental task for any Democrat to unseat a solid position, let alone a figure who has had little traction over the years.
Vindman’s campaign had been fully supported by the national Democratic Party, funneling funds to the candidate who spent more than $16 million in his campaign. He managed to lose to DSA candidate Angie Nixon, an avowed socialist, who did not exceed $1 million in her spending, and yet she trounced Vindman by nearly 12 percentage points.
That is not money wisely spent, but wisdom from Democrats in this state is in short supply over the years. Just take a look at the political landscape, and you would question the decisions made by the national party, which is deeply divided over the rise of the DSA faction in its ranks. The Vindman-Nixon battle displayed this division; would Dems back the old anti-Trump mindset, or the new DSA wave hitting their shores?
The desire to acquire any Senate seat makes the Democrats rapacious, to be sure. But when you have a polarizing figure like Vindman, running in a deeply red state, how much sense was it to pour that kind of cash into his campaign?! Maybe the Dems should be grateful he did not achieve a slender win, as they would have to redirect even more cash into a losing cause. As for Nixon, that DSA divide will probably lead to diminished donor funds coming her way.
This conflict reared up in another race in the state, as David Jolly won the Democratic nod for the governor’s mansion, set to be vacated by DeSantis with term limits in place. Jolly, in post-victory interviews, distanced himself strongly from the DSA socialist-communist wing, a wise move in a state that has seen the GOP become entrenched over the eight years since DeSantis first won.
Communism has little appeal where state fortunes have blossomed, the population continues to swell, and Republicans now sport a registered voter advantage of more than 1.5 million. Now roll in the number of transplants who fled here from oppressive regimes, and that type of political platform will not find much fertile ground with the locals.
And yet, Alex Vindman exhibits some profound confusion about this detail, even when licking his wounds in defeat. He originally hailed from communist Russia, and you would expect the last thing to appeal to him would be anything trending close to communism. But Trump derangement is a powerful pathology.
Ahead of yesterday’s election, he was giving voice to that in seemingly proper fashion.
Dem Senate candidate @AVindman says that while the Democratic Party is a big tent party, “if you’re someone that embraces Fidel Castro, communism, socialism — you’ve got no business being here in Florida.”

But the emptiness of his words was soon on display. The man never debated Nixon, where he would have been able to forcefully repudiate that platform. Instead he focused on Trump, and Moody during his campaign, believing that was sufficient. And then, after he lost in definitive fashion, he pledged support for the woman whose socialism he said had no place in the state.
“Rep. Nixon ran a strong campaign. I will be standing by her side in the fight against Ashley Moody. I hope you’ll join me.”
Hope is about all Democrats can expect in the state of Florida. Between the tired bleating of a never-Trump figurehead or the attempt to bring Das Kapital to the Capitol in Tallahassee, their hopes are fading faster than a suntan in Alaska in January.
