Déjà Vu All Over Again: Fan Incident at Yankees Playoff Game Sparks Comparisons to Infamous Jeffrey Maier Debacle 30 Years Ago 2026

A controversial play involving a New York Yankees fan on Wednesday reminded many of the infamous Jeffrey Maier incident from 30 years ago.

The Yankees took on the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS. Trailing 2-0 in the best-of-5 series and needing a win to keep their season alive, the Yankees trailed 4-2 in the sixth inning with infielder Anthony Volpe up to bat. With a man on first base, Volpe pulled an inside sinker to deep left field that appeared to go over the wall.

Yankee Stadium erupted in response to what was believed to be the game-tying home run.

Upon review, however, it was determined that the ball only went over the wall due to fan reaching out for it. The umpires ruled that the ball would have hit the wall and the outfielder would not have caught it, giving Volpe an RBI double instead of a two-run homer.

More than a few people drew parallels to the Maier incident.

In October 1996, Yankees star Derek Jeter hit a game-tying homer against the Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS. The Orioles outfielder immediately protested the home run, pointing up at the stands and insisting he was interfered with. The ump, however, ruled it a home run and the game remained tied.

Replays of the action revealed that Maier, just 12 years old at the time, reached out for the ball and caused it to go into the stands. Like the Volpe play, the ball would have hit the wall and stayed in the field of play without his interference.

With the umps getting the Volpe call right, fans viewed it as a form of justice for the blown call 30 years earlier.
