Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria’s President Iliana Iotova Friday signed a decree relieving Stoil Tzitzelkov of his duties as caretaker Deputy Prime Minister in charge of fair elections. The decree came shortly after Tzitzelkov himself announced at a news conference that he would resign and the Cabinet press office said the resignation was accepted by caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov.
The resignation followed allegations about Tzitzelkov having been arrested for marijuana use and driving under the influence of alcohol, made a day earlier by There Is Such a People.
Tzitzelkov said that he has a clean record and has become the target of a massive attack. He wrote on Facebook Friday morning that there were no charges, no convictions, and no restrictions in effect against him. “For two days now, there has been a massive attack against me. It is not personal. I am simply a convenient target. This is an attack against the Cabinet and its main mission – fair elections,” he wrote. He said that the attacks against him have made him a liability for the cause of fair elections.
Prime Minister Gurov said that Tzitzelkov and himself had discussed the matter and believe his resignation is the right decision “so as to defend the people’s vote and the trust in the government’s efforts to create conditions for holding fair elections”. He said that he does not doubt Tzitzelkov’s integrity and warned that his Cabinet’s ability to hold fair elections is under attack.
In a televised interview on Friday morning, President Iotova said that she would immediately sign a decree for the resignation of Tzitzelkov if such a proposal came to her desk. The decree was signed shortly after.
TISP hailed the resignation. “Tzitzelkov has fallen, and it is Yankulov’s turn,” TISP Deputy Floor Leader Stanislav Balabanov told journalists in Parliament’s lobby. “It’s Hristanov’s turn, too,” said TISP Floor Leader Toshko Yordanov, referring to Agriculture and Food Minister Ivan Hristanov. “These are hollow ministries, they can as well set up a ministry of the pink flamingo and put some buddy of Gurov at its head,” Yordanov said.
Asked to comment the allegations about Tzitzelkov prior to his resignation, Vazrazhdane Floor Leader Kostadin Kostadinov told journalists in Parliament that every caretaker minister gives cause for concern, singling out Tzitzelkov as the most flagrant case and saying that he should resign.
