Alliance for Rights and Freedoms to Refer Rejected Presidential Veto on Election Code to Constitutional Court 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The Alliance for Rights and Freedoms (APS) will refer the matter to the Constitutional Court, Deputy Chair of the parliamentary group Tanner Ali told journalists on Wednesday after Parliament rejected President Iliana Iotova’s veto on amendments to the Election Code earlier in the day.
“What happened today has nothing to do with democracy as it exists in Bulgaria and around the world,” Ali said.
He added that thanks to three votes from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) – New Beginning, along with two independent MPs during the second vote, the bill was adopted at second reading.
Ali recalled that the amendments to the Election Code stemmed from a proposal by Vazrazhdane to reduce the number of voting sections in countries outside the EU to 20. According to him, three MPs from MRF – New Beginning ensured a quorum at committee level during the first vote so that the bill could proceed to plenary debate.
“Today the masks fell. Until now they managed to act with BSP, GERB and There Is Such a People whenever they needed a majority or wanted something of theirs to pass – MRF – New Beginning managed to persuade MPs or even entire parliamentary groups. But today they did not. They are hiding behind some curtain because their conscience is bothering them,” Ali said.
He also commented on the statement by MP Edis Daudov, who earlier in the day was sworn in and announced he was leaving the APS parliamentary group. “We should ask how much money he received from [MRF – New Beginning Floor Leader] Delyan Peevski,” Ali said.
