Balgarianovinite.com The Apollonia Concertmasters concert will, for the third consecutive year, bring together musicians who live in the Republic of Korea, Germany, France and Austria during the 42nd Apollonia Arts Festival, Apollonia Foundation Executive Director Margarita Dimitrova told a news conference at the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) National Press Club in Sofia on Monday. Sozopol will once again become Bulgaria’s summer cultural capital between August 27 and September 6.
The festival will also see the launch of My Way in Art, a book by Apollonia founder Prof. Dimo Dimov. The publication was made possible by Milena Neyova, who recorded his recollections and compiled the book, edited by Silvia Choleva.
Dimitrova said the performers in the Apollonia Concertmasters include violinist Svetlin Roussev, who turned 50 this year. On September 2, he and pianist Ludmil Angelov will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Double Concerto for Violin and Piano. Roussev will appear on stage with his daughter.
“We have 70 events awaiting audiences in Sozopol this year,” Dimitrova said. More than 30 of them are concerts, while the programme also includes 10 films and 10 theatre productions.
The festival will officially open on August 27 at the Apollonia Amphitheatre with Crossroads of Cultures, featuring singer Nina Nikolina and the Trakia Folk Ensemble. The programme includes Spanish, Turkish, Albanian, Macedonian and other folk songs, with Bulgarian folklore taking centre stage.
This year’s festival will feature five exhibitions, the first opening on August 27. Dimitrova highlighted as the main visual arts event the exhibition of Art Gallery Kazanlak, Ivan Milev: Like a Seagull & The Islands Within. The programme will also include lectures dedicated to the artist. The exhibition opens on August 27, while Milev’s painting Ahinora will be displayed there only on September 2.
The theatre programme includes productions by state theatres and independent companies.
Dimitrova pointed to the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts’ production of They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, which features 35 graduating acting students. “The future of theatre has already been entrusted to these people,” she said. Children of the World, presented by Theatre 199 and directed by Dimitar Marinov, is based on a play by Stefan Tsanev, who is turning 90 this year.
She said the festival’s jazz and classical music events will take place at the Archaeological Museum.
Another highlight will be the Stara Zagora State Opera’s concert featuring mezzo-soprano Svetlina Stoyanova on September 5 at the Amphitheatre. Many of the leading names on the Bulgarian pop, jazz and rock scene will also appear during the festival, Dimitrova said.
The literary events will take place in the courtyard of the Sozopol Art Gallery.
Film screenings begin on August 28 with Stephan Komandarev’s Made in EU. “The meetings between directors, cinematographers and actors and the audience in Sozopol are always exciting and enjoyable,” Dimitrova said.
She highlighted the screening of Canadian filmmaker Genevieve Dulude-de Celles’ Nina Roza, starring Bulgarian actor and director Galin Stoev. He will lead one of the festival’s masterclasses for students and professional actors.
Violinist Albena Danailova, concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, will also give a masterclass for university and school students. She will perform with Rumen Tsvetkov and Alexander Somov on August 31.
The festival’s The Price of Success open discussions series will feature Nina Nikolina, Plamen Petrov, Director of Art Gallery Kazanlak, Ivo Dimchev, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), and Foundation 2032. Next year Foundation 2032 will join the race for the European Capital of Culture title on behalf of Burgas.
