August 24 Marks 60th Death Anniversary of Boris Angeloushev, Creator of BTA Logo 2026

Balgarianovinite.com August 24 marks the 60th anniversary of the death of Boris Angeloushev, an artist who was a pioneer of book design in Bulgaria and the creator of the logo of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
Boris Angeloushev was born on October 25, 1902, in Plovdiv. In 1928, he graduated in applied graphics from the Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he studied under professors Hans Meid and Ferdinand Spiegel. During the 1920s and early 1930s, he worked in Germany, contributing to several publications under the pen name Bruno Fuk.
After returning to Bulgaria in 1935, Angeloushev created a number of historical paintings. Among his best-known works are Asparuh Crosses the Danube (1939) and The Hanging of Vasil Levski (1942). He also illustrated a number of books, including Daughter-in-Law by Georgi Karaslavov, Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Bay Ganyo by Aleko Konstantinov, and Nemili-Nedragi (chased away, unneeded) by Ivan Vazov.
Angeloushev was a recipient of the Dimitrov Prize (1951, 1964) and was awarded the Order of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, First Class, in 1959 and the Order of Georgi Dimitrov in 1962.
In 1964, Angeloushev was invited by Lozan Strelkov, BTA’s longest serving director (from August 1, 1962 to January 9, 1981) to design the agency’s logo. The logo appeared on the front pages of all BTA bulletins and publications. In 1991, the year of the agency’s founding, 1898, was added beneath the emblem.
Boris Angeloushev died in Sofia on August 24, 1966, following a brief illness. The following day, August 25, a memorial service was held at the National Art Gallery. Among those attending were Union of Bulgarian Artists Chair Prof. Dechko Uzunov, the Nikolay Pavlovich Higher Institute of Fine Arts (today the National Academy of Art) Rector Prof. Ilia Petrov, journalists, artists, writers and senior government officials.
In his memory, the Executive Committee of the Plovdiv City People’s Council decided to rename one of the city’s streets after Boris Angeloushev. In 1968, the Union of Bulgarian Artists established a book illustration and design award in his name.
An obituary published by BTA at the time of his death read:
People’s Artist Boris Dimitrov Angeloushev Dies
Sofia, August 24, 1966 /BTA/
The great Bulgarian artist Boris Dimitrov Angeloushev died on August 24 following a brief illness.
Born on October 25, 1902, in Plovdiv into a family of teachers, Boris Angeloushev from his earliest years linked his life and work to the progressive movement in Bulgaria and abroad, including during his studies in applied graphics in Germany (…). Following the National Socialists’ seizure of power, he was forced to leave Germany and, after a brief stay in Czechoslovakia and Switzerland, returned to his homeland. (…)
In Bulgaria, Boris Angeloushev quickly established himself as a highly talented graphic artist and painter, both through his creative work and through his broader public activities. (…)
Boris Angeloushev’s vast and highly accomplished body of work in illustration, caricature and poster art represents a major contribution to the development of Bulgarian visual art. Through its expressiveness, economy of form and strong ideological character, his graphic work exerted a significant influence on the development and education of younger generations of artists. (…)
The people’s government highly valued Boris Angeloushev’s contribution to the development of Bulgaria’s national culture and awarded him the titles of People’s Artist and Dimitrov Prize Laureate.
With the death of People’s Artist Boris Angeloushev, Bulgarian visual art has lost one of its most distinguished representatives.
We bow our heads in memory of the artist and citizen Boris Angelushev.
