One person who isn’t offended by Shane Gillis’ Saturday Night Live monologue: Ben Shapiro.
The right-wing pundit on Tuesday defended Gillis and called out his critics for having what he viewed as an absurd and hysterical reaction to the comic’s SNL opener, after Gillis has been slammed by many on the internet for joking about women dressing “like whores” when they go to the gym.
Shapiro’s first take on the topic was direct — Gillis’ haters need to chill out.
“Number one, it’s a joke. A joke,” he said. “You don’t have to like the joke, you don’t have to think the joke speaks some sort of underlying truth, but it’s just a joke.”
He then said the uproar boils down to a few key things:
Let’s separate this into two questions: 1) are women dressing in more provocative fashion at the gym than they used to? In the colloquial parlance of Shane Gillis, are they dressing like whores? And 2) are men evil — this is the second part of his joke — for their eyeballs glancing at scantily clad women at the gym?
Because that’s the opposition. That either women aren’t dressing more provocatively than they used to, or that there are no predictable effects in life to women dressing more provocatively. Like, one of those two things has to be true to be upset at Shane Gillis’ joke.
Shapiro threw it out there after Gillis has been skewered by several media outlets, celebrities, and social media users for his quip.
Here is the joke that sparked the whole saga:
I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know that women just dress like whores now. I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe — have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts? Have you seen the shorts? Those neon — they’re like artificial bait colors.
The wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look, you’re not allowed to look — for real don’t look because they are filming. I’m in the background of like 10 TikToks right now.
Gillis was condemned by ex-Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy right after, who said in an Instagram video the joke left him “speechless.” But he had a lot to say about it.
“Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores, it makes the men calling them whores misogynists,” Levy vented.
He added, “More men need to be standing up in opposition to it because it’s complacency that has created the environment in which women are sexually assaulted and it’s a ‘conversation’ as opposed to a ‘crime.”
And Levy wasn’t the only one who hated it. Variety’s Marlow Stern wrote Gillis “bombed,” while NBC’s Sheinelle Jones said it felt “condescending” to women. And there has been numerous women posting their gym outfits on TikTok and Instagram, saying they were wearing their “whore” outfits in apparent defiance to Gillis.
On Tuesday, Shapiro and two of his female producers looked through several pictures and videos of women wearing tight, revealing clothing to the gym. Shapiro suggested they were making Gillis’ point for him.
“A whore is a thing with a definition. Is this what a prostitute would wear in public?” Shapiro asked, as a woman sporting a swimsuit-style bottom and a sports bra lingered on the screen. “If this woman were walking down Hollywood and Vine, would she be out of place?”
“Nooo?” one producer said gingerly, before starting to crack up.
“I’m not saying it, you guys get to say it,” Shapiro said.
He went on to say heterosexual men are hardwired to look at women who are showing off skin, so it’s hard for people to get upset when men notice it.
“There is a difference between the passing glance and gawking. Obviously there are creepy dudes who exist and who are just staring and ogling women. That’s gross, and it’s creepy, and they shouldn’t do it,” he said. “Also, if you wear scantily clad clothing to the gym, and a guy directs his gaze to you and then away, that is how human biology works.”
