Bolhrad High School in Ukraine Continues to Teach Bulgarian Language, History and Traditions 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Students of Bulgarian descent will continue to study the Bulgarian language, Bulgarian literature, history, traditions and customs, and other subjects in Bulgarian, according to the curriculum at the Bolhrad High School in Ukraine’s Odesa Oblast. Textbooks and teaching aids necessary to organize the educational process will be provided. This is stipulated in a protocol signed between the Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine during a visit of a delegation led by acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, the Bulgarian ministry’s press centre reported on Tuesday.
The document highlights the important role of the Bolhrad High School as an institution preserving the national identity and cultural heritage of the Bulgarian minority in Ukraine, and guarantees the right of Ukrainian citizens belonging to this minority to receive education in Bulgarian.
The Bulgarian side undertakes to conduct professional development courses for the teaching staff of Bolhrad High School at higher education institutions in Bulgaria, as well as language courses and practical training for the school’s students. At the request of the Ukrainian side, qualified teachers may also be seconded to teach Bulgarian language and literature, the history and geography of Bulgaria, Bulgarian folk music, Bulgarian folk dances, and other subjects.
The protocol also stipulates that the Bulgarian side will provide places for higher education to acquire the educational and qualification degrees of “bachelor” or “master” after completing full secondary education for the top graduate of Bolgrad High School, as well as for the winner of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in Bulgarian language and literature.
The protocol, which provides for the continuation and expansion of opportunities for the students of Bolgrad High School, is the only education-related document signed by the ministers of education.
During the visit of the Bulgarian delegation to Ukraine, the ministers of education, Sergey Ignatov and Oksen Lysovyi, held an informal discussion, during which the possibility was raised for Ukrainian children enrolled in Bulgarian schools to study their mother tongue, including through online learning, in accordance with the current legislation of the Republic of Bulgaria.
The two ministers also discussed future cooperation between universities regarding research, scientific work and studies of the medieval history of both nations. From the Ukrainian side, the issue was raised of a future Bulgarian-Ukrainian historical commission to review the presentation of Ukrainian history, especially medieval history, in Bulgarian textbooks.
The acting Minister of Education and Science, Sergey Ignatov, expressed the view that this would also be beneficial for the Bulgarian side, as it would lead to a broader study of Bulgarian medieval history in schools in Ukraine.
A Bulgarian delegation led by the acting Prime Minister, Andrey Gurov, arrived in Kyiv, the government press service reported on Monday. The delegation in Kyiv also included the acting Foreign Minister, Nadezhda Neynsky, the acting Ministers of Transport and Communications, Korman Ismailov, Defence, Atanas Zapryanov, Education and Science, Sergey Ignatov, and Energy, Traicho Traikov.
