Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian economist Prof. Branimir Botev has been elected Vice President of the European League for Economic Cooperation (ELEC). The appointment was announced in an official letter from ELEC President Javier Arias to Vasil Karaivanov, Secretary General of the Bulgarian section of the organization. In his new role, Prof. Botev will oversee ELEC’s activities across Eastern Europe.
Botev’s election further strengthens Bulgaria’s presence on the European agenda. This year, ahead of the 80th anniversary of the European League for Economic Cooperation, Sofia will host the organization’s international security conference in October.
According to the letter, the countries of Eastern Europe have enormous development potential, which has become increasingly evident in recent years.
ELEC was founded in 1946 with the support of the United States as a pan-European platform promoting Europe’s economic and political recovery and integration alongside the Marshall Plan. As part of its mission, the organization helped establish the European Movement and became a driving force behind pan-European initiatives, culminating in the creation of what is now the European Union.
Today, ELEC is listed in the European Commission’s Transparency Register as an institutional and corporate interest representative with accreditation to engage with the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg, and other European institutions. Its monitoring reports and policy recommendations are among the most authoritative documents shaping discussions on major European policy decisions.
Prof. Botev has served as president of the Bulgarian section of ELEC since June 2019.
