Balgarianovinite.com A brown bear caused damage to an apiary in the land of the village of Sini Vrah, Asenovgrad Municipality, the Municipal Administration said on Saturday. The beehives are located in Chotrova Mahala, at an altitude of 1,250 metres.
The apiary is enclosed by a wooden fence with concrete posts and rails. A gate made of wire mesh has also been installed. The bear entered the apiary for seven consecutive days, between August 20 and 26, during the hours of darkness.
Of the 54 bee colonies housed in 47 hives, 30 were damaged and overturned. A total of 150 kg of honey was eaten. Holes have been dug in several places beneath the fence, which is believed to be where the bear entered. Bear tracks and areas where the animal had trampled and lain on the ground were also found. The total value of the damage amounts to more than EUR 5,300.
The undamaged hives have already been moved to another location to prevent another attack.
A specially convened commission inspected the site and, based on its findings, proposed to the Director of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Plovdiv that the affected owner be compensated.
