Balgarianovinite.com On Monday, BTA launched a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs dedicated to the 160th birth anniversary of Bulgarian poet Pencho Slaveykov and to Bulgarian modernism. The first event, titled Pencho Slaveykov Today, took place in his hometown of Tryavna, at the Slaveykov House Museum.
The December issue of LIK magazine will reflect the campaign, featuring reports from the discussions as well as a special section with 160 contributions of 160 words each, marking the anniversary, similar to a previous campaign dedicated to Bulgarian writer and public figure Aleko Konstantinov.
In his remarks, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev said that Pencho Slaveykov offers a model of what the modern person should look like, namely open to new ideas.
Valchev noted that Slaveykov shows that being modern means embracing new ideas while pursuing spiritual growth and universal values, without rejecting national identity or tradition. “His life and work were shaped by his father Petko Slaveykov and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles,” added Valchev, who also recalled that Pencho Slaveykov was even nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1912.
The BTA Director General noted that these initiatives show Bulgarians can honor their cultural leaders continuously, not just on anniversaries, and expressed hope that the discussions will extend beyond institutions to reveal the boundless nature of the human spirit.
Literary scholar and critic Yordan Eftimov said one of the goals is to create a self-portrait of the nation through new readings of familiar works, helping Bulgarians better understand themselves. He emphasized BTA’s role in presenting accurate information and expert views in an era of misinformation. Eftimov added that the agency’s expanding network will offer a fuller picture of how Slaveykov is remembered across Bulgaria and how his ideas are followed. He highlighted Slaveykov’s dual role as a modernizer and Europeanizer, suggesting that attitudes toward him reflect Bulgaria’s own development.
Initiatives like this preserve Bulgaria’s cultural memory and continue the poet’s legacy, said Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev.
Minev described Slaveykov as a deep observer of national character, like Ivan Vazov, and a bold critic who sought higher artistic standards. He added that Slaveykov’s life builds bridges and said such figures endure despite being misunderstood, striving to awaken society through critical thought and poetry.
India can take inspiration from how the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) partners with local communities to preserve culture, promote it, and make it more widely known among Bulgarians, said Vijay Joshi, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of India’s national news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), who was a guest at the Slaveykov House Museum in Tryavna during the launch of BTA’s initiative.
Pencho Slaveykov (born April 27, 1866 in Tryavna) was the youngest son of distinguished poet Petko Slaveykov. In 1884, at the age of seventeen, he became seriously ill and was left with lifelong physical impairments affecting his speech, writing, and mobility, forcing him to use a cane. He later came to see his suffering as a “great teacher”, which strongly shaped his creative outlook.
His worldview and work were influenced by Henrik Ibsen, Heinrich Heine, and Friedrich Nietzsche. He developed both intimate lyrical poetry and socio-critical works, including poems written in opposition to the rule of Stefan Stambolov, which reinforced his democratic ideals. His first collection, Lilies of the Valley (“Momini Sulzi”), reflects early Heine influence.
In 1892 he studied philosophy in Leipzig, where he took part in cultural life, contributed to Bulgarian literary magazines, and worked on epic poetry such as Blood-Stained Song. After returning to Bulgaria in 1898, he worked as a teacher, librarian, and later director of the National Library and the National Theatre, and was closely connected with the Misul literary circle.
In 1911 he left Bulgaria, lived in Switzerland and Italy, and died in Brunate on May 28, 1912. His remains were later returned to Bulgaria in 1921.
