BTA Presents Latest Issue of LIK Magazine Dedicated to National Palace of Culture’s 45th Anniversary 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The March issue of BTA’s LIK magazine, dedicated to the National Palace of Culture’s (NDK) 45th anniversary, was launched at the Peroto Literary Club in Sofia on Monday, with participants joining via video link from BTA’s national press clubs in Bulgaria and abroad.
The magazine was presented by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and NDK Executive Director Andriana Petkova. Attending the event in Sofia were also Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov, Editor-in-Chief of LIK; architect Stanislav Konstantinov; and sculptor Prof. Emil Popov.
Valchev highlighted the need for modern cultural infrastructure in the capital, including a new concert hall, art gallery, library, and National Museum. He emphasized that BTA’s archives and the LIK editorial team help preserve and promote the country’s cultural life, with the national news agency now producing multiple daily reports on events at the NDK. He raised the question of what cultural legacy today’s generation will leave, pointing out that previous generations left lasting symbols such as community centres and the Academy of Arts.
NDK Executive Director Petkova said that “the NDK’s heart beats with culture, and that is the most beautiful legacy we can leave to future generations.” She noted that efforts were underway to enrich the NDK’s cultural and artistic collection, something that has not been done since the final years of the democratic changes in Bulgaria. “Unlike other cultural institutions, we have the opportunity to showcase the synthesis of the arts and how they coexist here—from exhibitions to concerts, poetry, and opera,” Petkova said. She added that within a year, a gallery dedicated to children’s art will open at the NDK. “We have a duty to give young people wings, a stage, and support – to help build a new creative generation,” she said.
LIK’s Editor-in-Chief Georgi Lozanov said that the National Palace of Culture represents a unique ”event-space” that embodies the characteristics of contemporary Bulgarian culture. He highlighted NDK’s role in preserving Bulgarian national history and culture, particularly during the period inspired by communist leader Todor Zhivkov’s daughter Lyudmila Zhivkova, when cultural projects were intended as a subtle alternative to Sovietization. According to Lozanov, the NDK has become an open, contemporary space that combines freedom, joy, and the interplay of culture and entertainment. He stressed that the NDK allows visitors to experience modern Bulgarian culture in its many forms, from the arts to conferences and scientific events, shaping a broader understanding of national culture.
Architect Stanislav Konstantinov, who had taken part in the construction of the iconic building and the surrounding space of the NDK, said that the complex was the work of four people: architect Aleksandar Barov, his wife Nadezhda Barova, architect Kosta Kostov, and architect Dimitar Zhelyazkov.
“The NDK is an undisputed pinnacle of architecture and of its synthesis with the plastic arts, achieved through the technological capabilities of Bulgaria’s engineering thought at the time,” sculptor Prof. Emil Popov said.
The Festival and Congress Centre in Varna is the only branch of the NDK in the country. Over the years, it has hosted a number of major national and international festivals in music, film, and theatre, said Victoria Miteva, who is responsible for the corporate management and planning of the complex.
“The Vasil Levski Palace of Culture and Sports in Veliko Tarnovo has been a key factor in the city’s cultural and public life for 40 years,” its current director, Aleksandar Karacholev, said. He added that, for Veliko Tarnovo, it plays the same role that the NDK does for the capital and the country – a venue for a wide range of events, combining tradition, innovation, and a vision for the future.
The NDK is a one-of-a-kind facility that continues to play a central role in Bulgaria’s cultural life, said Hristo Dimitrov, producer and choreographer of the Bulgare National Folklore Ensemble.
The NDK stage has a key role in the development of Rhodope music and in shaping the career paths of its performers, said musician, producer, and head of Bulgaria’s largest bagpipe ensemble, 101 Bagpipes, Nikola Markovski.
BTA’s correspondent in Bucharest, Martina Gancheva, recalled that nearly 100 events with Romanian participation have been held at the National Palace of Culture over the years. She also spoke with architect Eliza Yokina, who noted that the NDK is an emblem not only of culture but of architecture as well.
“Bulgarian culture is widely represented in Odesa’s urban events – concerts and festivals, celebrations marking the Day of Slavic Literacy, the Day of the Bessarabian Bulgarians, as well as the city’s holiday,” said Nadezhda Cherneva, director of the O. Salik Odesa Municipal Music Theatre.
“On the Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii research vessel, we have a kind of miniature palace of culture,” the ship’s captain, Radko Muevski, said, adding that the vessel itself, through its name, serves as a bearer of Bulgarian culture. Muevski explained that on board, the crew can discuss a wide range of topics with representatives of other nations and introduce foreigners to Bulgarian culture and national character.
