BTA Showcases English-Language Publications at the London Book Fair 2026

Balgarianovinite.com BTA presented its English-language publications at the London Book Fair on Tuesday.
Bulgaria participated in the fair for a third consecutive year with a stand organized by the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London, led by Director Svetla Dionisieva and staff member Miglena Rogacheva.
Ambassador Tihomir Stoytchev, Bulgaria’s ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, officially opened the Bulgarian stand.
Stoytchev described the London Book Fair as one of the world’s most prestigious events and a platform for cultural exchange and international cooperation. He said it brings together writers, poets, translators, publishers and critics for discussions and the launch of new projects and partnerships in literature and publishing.
Stoytchev thanked the team behind the event and the opening of the Bulgarian stand for a third consecutive year, especially the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London team led by Dionisieva.
“Special thanks to Rosie Goldsmith, a long-standing friend and partner of the Embassy and the Cultural Institute, who has supported our projects; and to Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency, who was recently reappointed for a second term in this important position and has been a great friend of the foreign service, promoting our activities abroad,” Stoytchev said.
BTA presented 10 issues of LIK magazine, first published in 1965, six years before the inaugural London Book Fair, as well as a book on the history and archives of Bulgaria’s national news agency, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev said at the opening of the stand.
Valchev said two of the LIK issues focused on Bulgaria’s presence in Antarctica: Bulgarian Science in Antarctica and To Antarctica and Back under a Bulgarian Flag. They were presented alongside two other books on the subject that opened Bulgaria’s stand at the London Book Fair: Antarctica: History, Nature, Bulgarian Polar Explorers by Christo Pimpirev and Iglika Trifonova, and Christo Pimpirev: The Antarctic Hitchhiker by Trifonova. “On Monday evening, in a packed hall at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute, we had the opportunity to present all these Knigomania books and BTA magazines together with the authors, who are with us again today, and kaval player and composer Theodosii Spassov, whose original melodies from his album recorded in Antarctica accompany the presentations in London of Bulgarian publications on Antarctica,” Valchev said at the opening of the Bulgarian stand.
“I am very proud that my books on Antarctica are being presented at the world’s largest book fair and are drawing interest from thousands of visitors,” Christo Pimpirev said at the opening of the Bulgarian stand.
“Every book fair is a celebration of writers, translators and illustrators,” Bulgarian Book Association Vice-Chair Gergana Dimitrova said.
“Artificial intelligence is a highly useful tool, but it also makes it essential to protect authorship, which is especially important for us as an association representing the publishing sector,” she said. Dimitrova added that efforts were under way to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in literature. “It is important to protect the people who create genuine art,” she said.
European Literature Network Director Rosie Goldsmith and Bulgarian publisher and editor Svetlozar Zhelev held a discussion in London on Alek Popov’s satirical prose. “The reason we want to do this is to celebrate a great friend of many of you, many of the writers, and, if you like, a precursor to the great Georgi Gospodinov: Alek Popov,” Goldsmith said.
“He wrote amazing short stories and novels which are among our best examples of political and social satire, something very important in the Bulgarian literary tradition,” Zhelev said of Alek Popov (1966-2024). Zhelev added that satire was among the earliest genres in 19th-century Bulgarian literature, citing authors such as Hristo Botev, Lyuben Karavelov and Petko Slaveykov. Goldsmith completed the list by adding Aleko Konstantinov.
Publishers Manol Peykov of Janet 45 and Ilian Andonov of Knigomania also attended the event at the Bulgarian stand. Bulgarian composer and kaval player Theodosii Spassov and London-based singer Maria Georgieva performed two Bulgarian folk songs.
This year’s edition of the fair opened at the historic Olympia hall and runs until Thursday, featuring more than 100 events in various formats, including programmes for writers, academic and professional publishers, translators, and author talks. The fair map lists more than 300 exhibitors, including Brazil, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Canada, China, Malta, the United Arab Emirates, Poland, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Ukraine, France, Croatia, Czechia and South Korea, as well as a shared stand representing African countries.
A large share of the new participants were technology companies specializing in AI-generated audiobooks and content distribution platforms.
