Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) has signed a partnership agreement with the A to Z Foundation to promote the international A to JazZ festival, which begins on Thursday.
“Today we are announcing the partnership between Bulgaria’s national news agency and yet another jazz festival. I would like to remind you that at the end of last year, BTA published an issue of its LIK magazine dedicated to jazz in Bulgaria, marking the 50th anniversary of the country’s first jazz festival. At that time, we created a map of jazz festivals in Bulgaria, which showed that over the years their number has reached the remarkable total of 65, spread across 21 of the country’s 28 regions.
“BTA already has permanent partnership agreements and receives materials from the organizers of some of Bulgaria’s most prominent jazz festivals, including those in Bansko, Samokov, and the Troyan region. However, one of the most renowned festivals over the past 15 years has been the international A to JazZ Festival in Sofia,” said BTA Director General Kiril Valchev.
Valchev recalled that BTA’s first news report about the festival dates back to its inaugural year, 2011. “In those early years, BTA would publish only one or two news stories marking the opening and closing of the festival. Last year, however, we published 26 news reports about the festival,” Valchev said.
“The idea behind the agreement we are about to sign is to ensure year-round information about the festival’s preparation – receiving materials, including photos and videos with cleared copyright, which can be used by all media both in Bulgaria and abroad through BTA’s English-language service. Of the 26 publications last year, 18 were released in English,” Valchev said.
He also recalled that on Jazz Day, April 30 this year, BTA established its 46th national press club, dedicated to jazz, with the idea that it would function similarly to the agency’s national book press club, which travels with book fairs across the country.
The goal is for this to become a traveling press club of the agency during jazz festivals, Valchev explained.
“I am extremely proud, happy, and grateful for the gesture that BTA is making toward A to JazZ, especially with this special gift that we are receiving. This represents 15 years of development of one of the most emblematic cultural events both in the country and in the region. Why am I saying this? Because, as Mr. Valchev himself noted, in 2011 we had two news items – one about the start and one about the end of the festival. Now we have 26, of which 18 are in English.
It is no coincidence that they are in English, because this will be an extremely useful tool for all our national and international partners, among whom stand out media outlets such as one of the largest and most significant television networks for jazz, classical music, opera, and ballet, Mezzo, and its online channels Medici, as well as media such as The Guardian, and also tourism catalogues of various major companies engaged in festival tourism, including British Airways.
We have already been included for the second year in their catalog of recommended destinations and reasons to visit. But this is precisely due to the door that BTA is opening to foreign media, listeners, and readers, who can access and draw information directly from the source,” said Peter Dimitrov, festival founder and chairman of the board of the A to Z Foundation.
The lineup for this year’s festival includes Grammy Award winners such as the Miles Electric Band, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Nate Smith.
The opening night is traditionally dedicated to the World Music Showcase, which will present 12 ensembles from all corners of the globe, supporting emerging international talent.
International artists such as the Hania Derej Trio, Tomoki Sanders, Sorvina, and The Simon Grey Collective will also perform, along with Bulgarian groups led by Victoria Kirilova, Emil Tassev, and Gueorgui Kornazov.
