Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova has urgently recalled Bulgaria’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates to Sofia, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said here on Friday.
“Under the established procedure, heads of diplomatic missions are relieved of their posts by a decree of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria upon a proposal by the Council of Ministers. The Foreign Ministry will take the necessary steps to submit the matter to the Council of Ministers for consideration,” the Ministry said.
Petrova has also ordered an inspection of the activities of the Bulgarian Embassy in the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry said.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said he expected the Foreign Minister to prepare the Ambassador’s recall as quickly as possible. He made the statement at a briefing at the Council of Ministers on measures taken by state institutions against corruption.
Also on Friday, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said that a company owned by the ambassador’s father had paid for private flights taken by Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski, who has been designated by the United States under the Global Magnitsky Act for corruption and influence peddling. According to Demerdzhiev, the flights were paid for with funds allegedly diverted from public procurement contracts for guardrails. The Minister also raised the question of whether the ambassador’s appointment was related to actions carried out by his father’s company. Demerdzhiev said the case was among the mechanisms through which sanctions under the Magnitsky Act could be circumvented.
