Bulgaria completed a full set of medals at the Veterans World Wrestling Championships in Amman, Jordan, on Thursday as its wrestlers won silver and bronze.
Petar Georgiev (70 kg) won silver and Krasimir Nenkov (100 kg) bronze in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Georgiev opened with a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan’s Einar Aitkeshov before edging past Iran’s Mohamad Saedi in a quarter-final that ended 5-5. In the semi-finals, he overcame a 5-2 deficit to pin another Kazakh wrestler, Aidin Nugumanov, in 1 minute 52 seconds. He lost 2-11 to Georgia’s Goga Gogiberashvili in the final.
Georgiev reached a veterans championship final for the first time, having previously won two bronze medals.
Nenkov secured third place at 100 kg with a 9-7 win over Russia’s Ilya Idovichenko in the bronze-medal bout.
Nenkov beat Turkiye’s Aytac Demir 8-0 in his opening bout but was pinned by eventual champion Rustam Ekazhev of Kazakhstan. In the repechage, he earned a convincing 9-0 win over Iran’s Sanor Gubari to reach the bronze-medal bout.
Both competed in Division A (ages 35-40).
Earlier, Plamen Palev won gold at 88 kg in Division B (ages 41-45), claiming his third world title.
The last two Bulgarians to compete, Remzi Osman (62 kg) and Ivaylo Sarov (70 kg), will wrestle on Friday in freestyle Division E (ages 56-60). Osman will bid for his 11th world title.
