Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria is actively contributing to the European Union’s core vision of strengthening Europe’s common security, built on new initiatives such as the European Air Shield and the European Space Shield, said Prime Minister Rumen Radev at a briefing at Boyana Residence following a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa.
According to Radev, when discussing defence, it is important to note that all the security challenges it faces requires of Europe to pool its scientific, technological and industrial efforts. The prime minister assured that Bulgaria is actively working to strengthen its industrial base and develop its defence research capabilities so that it can make a meaningful contribution to a safer and stronger Europe.
Radev described efforts to improve connectivity in all aspects — transport, energy and digital — as an important element in the EU’s development. The prime minister expressed satisfaction that he and the European Council president share many common ideas about the future development of this connectivity and about Bulgaria’s role as an extremely important link in the chain of European connectivity, both within Europe and with the regions surrounding the continent.
“With the support of the EU, we will improve our road and rail connectivity so that Bulgaria does not become an area with reduced capacity to accommodate all the huge flows that we expect in the future,” the Bulgarian prime minister said.
He stressed that discussions are already underway about green energy corridors from both North Africa and the Caspian region, all of which would once again pass through Bulgaria. Radev also mentioned digital corridors, which likewise run through the country.
The prime minister thanked Costa for understanding and driving this vision and these processes. “I am glad that we will work together with him to ensure that Bulgaria is at the focus of the EU’s efforts to achieve much greater connectivity in the future,” Radev said.
Radev described EU enlargement as a traditional topic of his discussions with Costa and said it had also been an important subject of their talks today. “The president of the European Council knows very well that Bulgaria is a strong driving force behind the integration of the countries neighbouring the EU, particularly the Western Balkans, as part of expanding the space of peace and prosperity in Europe,” Radev said.
He stressed that Bulgaria wants this enlargement process not to be driven by short-term geopolitical developments, but to be based on the principle of merit.
Costa is currently on a “Tour des Capitales”, during which he is meeting with heads of state and government to discuss the European Union’s agenda, with a strong focus on the bloc’s next Multiannual Financial Framework. During the first week of his tour, Costa visited Bratislava, Tallinn, Vilnius, Riga and Prague.
On September 4, he is scheduled to travel to Nicosia for a meeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and to Ljubljana for a meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa.
