Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria has the potential to establish itself as a key regional energy hub through the development of modern infrastructure and strategic projects of European significance, caretaker Energy Minister Traicho Traikov said on Thursday. He was speaking at the opening of a round table on the low-carbon industry as a driver of growth and competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy, organized by the Centre for the Study of Democracy.
Traikov said that in recent years Europe’s energy landscape has been changing at a very rapid pace under the impact of geopolitical shocks, disrupted supplies and unstable markets. He added that energy is increasingly becoming a strategic instrument of key importance for the economy, security and competitiveness of countries.
Traikov stated that Bulgaria’s industry remains highly energy- and carbon-intensive, making it vulnerable to rising emissions costs and volatile energy prices. According to him, targeted policies are needed for accelerated transformation, including electrification, improved energy efficiency and the introduction of new technologies.
Investments in energy infrastructure, diversification of sources and the development of energy corridors play a key role in this process, Traikov said, adding that Bulgaria is actively working on strategic regional initiatives that will improve supply security and expand access to energy resources.
He said that nuclear energy remains a main pillar of the energy system, with projects for new capacities set to ensure stability amid the growing share of renewable energy sources.
Traikov also highlighted the importance of energy storage systems and the development of pumped-storage hydropower plants, which are crucial for balancing the energy system. He said that Bulgaria is working on projects with the potential to significantly increase storage capacity.
He said that the transition to a low-carbon economy is not only a technological process, but also an economic and social one, requiring consistent policies and partnership between the state, business and society.
