Bulgaria Has Potential to Deepen Industrial Partnership with US in High Tech, Defence, Deputy PM Poulev Says in Washington

Bulgaria has opportunities to accelerate cooperation and take its industrial partnership with the United States to the next level, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investment and Industry Alexander Poulev said in Washington.
“Bulgaria is open to attracting US investment,” Poulev said as he opened a forum on defence and security opportunities in the Black Sea region together with Bradley McKinney, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US Department of Commerce, the Bulgarian Ministry of Economy, Investment and Industry reported on Tuesday.
The event was organized by the US Department of Commerce and held as part of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting & Exposition.
“Maritime security is one of our key priorities. We will seek opportunities to develop high-tech solutions combining American capabilities with Bulgaria’s engineering and technical expertise in drones, counter-drone systems, surveillance and cybersecurity,” Poulev said.
“We have the political will and the capacity to deliver tangible results. Our proposal is to expand production capacity and modernize existing facilities, while making use of highly qualified engineering personnel. This means establishing direct joint ventures with the Bulgarian State and creating opportunities for manufacturing in Bulgaria, rather than relying solely on contracts to purchase finished products,” he said.
Before the forum opened, Poulev and McKinney held a bilateral meeting to discuss opportunities to deepen cooperation, transfer technology and expand partnerships between Bulgarian and American companies in the high-tech and defence sectors.
During the exhibition, Poulev also met with representatives of leading US companies, including Boeing Defense, Space & Security and L3Harris. He visited the Washington headquarters of Lockheed Martin, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of aircraft, missile systems and space technologies.
The meetings addressed ways to expand partnerships with Bulgarian companies in aviation, defence and space technologies, autonomous drones and industrial cooperation, as well as opportunities for Bulgarian companies to join international manufacturing supply chains, the Bulgarian Economy Ministry said.
“We welcome American companies wishing to establish production in Bulgaria, carry out comprehensive technology transfers and create highly skilled, well-paid jobs,” Poulev said.
Poulev is on an official visit to Washington, where he is leading a business delegation of 20 Bulgarian companies organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria.
The AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition is the Association of the United States Army’s annual exhibition and professional forum. It brings together more than 40,000 participants, over 750 exhibitors and representatives from more than 100 countries. The programme combines presentations of defence technologies and equipment with professional forums, discussions on the modernization of the US Army, and meetings involving military leaders, government officials, defence companies and international delegations.
Bulgarian industry has the potential to play a more active role in international supply chains and develop partnerships with leading global companies, Poulev said, as quoted by his Ministry prior to the visit. The Government’s task is to create opportunities for Bulgarian businesses to access new markets, attract investment, develop technologically and achieve sustainable growth. In the United States, the delegation will present the potential of Bulgarian companies and work to build long-term partnerships that bring added value to the Bulgarian economy, Poulev said earlier before departing for Washington.
