Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria-Indonesia trade grew by nearly 60% year-on-year in Q1 2026, Deputy Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Krasimir Yakimov said after talks with Indonesian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Muhammad Anis Matta on Monday.
Yakimov said the growth pointed to significant untapped potential in bilateral economic relations and created a solid basis for expanding trade and investment.
The talks covered investment plans by Indonesian companies, including projects in industrial development, logistics and manufacturing. The sides also discussed Bulgaria’s potential role as a logistics hub for Indonesian goods bound for European markets.
The two sides looked at prospects for broader cooperation in digital technologies, the defence industry and innovation. Bulgarian exports in Q1 2026 totalled USD 17.2 million, while imports from Indonesia reached USD 16.1 million, Yakimov said. He called for continued efforts to increase and diversify trade and to encourage more active business-to-business contacts.
Transport connectivity between Europe and Southeast Asia was also discussed. The Bulgarian side presented the advantages of the ports of Varna and Burgas, as well as opportunities for joint logistics projects. Labour mobility was another topic on the agenda. “We are ready to support potential access for workers from Indonesia through faster administrative procedures,” Yakimov said.
“Bulgaria has a strategic geographic position, modernizing transport infrastructure and good conditions for developing logistics operations. Our country can be a reliable partner for Indonesian business as it enters European markets,” Yakimov said.
Bulgaria expressed interest in expanding exports of agricultural and food products, as well as pharmaceutical, cosmetic and industrial products.
The meeting also focused on the role of the Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation as the main mechanism for developing bilateral relations. The Bulgarian side expressed readiness to host the commission’s next session, alongside a business forum with companies from the two countries.
“Bulgaria attaches great importance to developing relations with Indonesia. This year marks 70 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries, which is a good basis for more active economic and investment cooperation,” Yakimov said.
At the end of the talks, the two sides welcomed progress on the EU-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and voiced confidence that its future entry into force would give a fresh boost to investment, trade and economic ties between Bulgaria and Indonesia.
