Bulgaria Marks 110 Years since Battle of Dobrich and 86 Years since Craiova Treaty 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Two anniversaries were marked in Bulgaria on Monday commemorating the country’s efforts to keep the geographical and historical region of Dobrudzha inside its borders despite claims by Romania.
On September 5-7, 1916, the Bulgarian army repelled an offensive by Romanian and Russian troops in the Battle of Dobrich, during World War I, thus contributing to what the Bulgarians call the “liberation” of Southern Dobrudzha. However, the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly awarded the territory to Romania. On September 7, 1940, during World War II, the Treaty of Craiova was signed and Southern Dobrudzha was reincorporated into Bulgaria. It remains so to this day.
The 110th anniversary of the Battle of Dobrich and the 86th anniversary of the Treaty of Craiova were officially celebrated in the town of Dobrich on Monday.
In a message of congratulations to the residents of Dobrich and the town mayor, President Iliana Iotova said that the stories of a free Bulgarian Dobrudzha are a source of self-confidence and pride for many people, the presidential press secretariat reported. “The road to freedom for this beautiful Bulgarian region was unjustly long. It was destined to endure grave injustices and to welcome liberation three times,” Iotova said in her message.
“The Treaty of Craiova finally healed one of the most painful wounds in every Bulgarian heart and revived the lasting friendship between the Bulgarian and Romanian peoples,” the President stated. She noted that today Bulgarians cannot imagine their country without the region where “the Bulgarian state was born and grew stronger” and whose fertile land is aptly called the nation’s “Granary”. Iotova noted that two great figures of Bulgarian literature, short-story writer Yordan Yovkov (1880-1937) and poetess Dora Gabe (1888-1983) are associated with Dobrudzha.
The commemorations marking the two anniversaries began on Monday with a memorial service at the Military Cemetery Museum in Dobrich. The service was led by Metropolitan Ioan of Varna and Veliki Preslav, concelebrated by priests from the Dobrich spiritual district.
