Balgarianovinite.com On August 15, Bulgaria’s Orthodox Christians celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, one of the major Christian holidays.
It is also the official holiday of the Black Sea cities of Varna and Nessebar, as well as of the southwestern town of Kyustendil.
During the liturgy at the Dormition of the Mother of God Church in Kyustendil, Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Daniil said the Holy Mother of God did not leave the world after her Dormition and continues to protect Christians.
“We sing of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God and of the end of her earthly life, because she did not leave the world,” the Patriarch said. He added that on this day believers wholeheartedly glorify the Mother of God. He recalled the tradition according to which, after her burial, the Holy Mother of God appeared to the Apostles and said: “Rejoice, for I am with you always.”
Patriarch Daniil noted that, just as Jesus Christ is with His followers always, even to the end of the age, so His Mother, who was given to all humanity as a mother, has not abandoned us. Through her motherly protection and prayers, the Holy Mother of God continually intercedes with God for His mercy upon all people, the Patriarch said.
He also spoke about the visit to Bulgaria of the Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Holy Mother of God, which is known for streaming myrrh. He described the icon’s presence in Bulgaria as a great blessing and recalled that it has been streaming myrrh since 2007.
He said the myrrh-streaming icon is a source of support for believers and strengthens their faith. In today’s world, many people suffer from feelings of abandonment, alienation and anxiety, which makes spiritual signs and testimonies to God’s presence particularly important, he said.
Patriarch Daniil stressed the importance of repentance and confession as a path to overcoming sin and restoring the bond between man and God.
President Iliana Iotova and hundreds of worshippers gathered at the Troyan Monastery for its feast day, the President’s press secretariat said. Iotova attended the liturgy led by the monastery’s hegumen, Bishop Vasily of Dragovitia. The President joined clergy and worshippers in the traditional procession with the Three-handed Theotokos, the miracle-working icon which has been kept at the monastery for 426 years.
Iotova met with Bishop Vasily to discuss the possibility of displaying relics kept at the monastery in a museum to make the history of the holy site more widely known. The meeting was attended by Troyan Mayor Donka Mihaylova, Lovech Regional Governor Plamen Hristov and local government representatives.
Also on Saturday, National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova wished Bulgarians God’s protection and called for greater unity and kindness towards one another in a Facebook post marking the holiday. “May the Mother of God protect us all, and may goodness find its way into our homes,” Dotsova wrote. She wished that the Mother of God would give people strength to work for society, uphold Christian values and be more united and kinder to one another.
