Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria participated in the international exercise Black Sea 2026 in Romania, the Border Police General Directorate reported on Friday.
The exercise took place on Thursday and Friday in the Romanian city of Constanta and Romanian territorial waters as part of a joint operation, coordinated by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency – Frontex.
Structures with coast guard functions from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkiye participated in the exercise. According to the Border Police, the main goals were to increase operational interaction, improve interoperability and test readiness for joint actions in the event of complex situations in the maritime environment.
Border police ships of Bulgaria and Romania, as well as a Turkish Coast Guard Command ship with a helicopter on board, participated in the exercise. A ship of the Romanian Navy and a helicopter of the Romanian Intelligence Service also participated in the implementation of the individual scenarios.
According to the scenario, the specialized teams practiced actions to identify and control a vessel posing a threat, neutralize the threat and release hostages. In the subsequent stage, a search and rescue operation was carried out to provide assistance to people in distress at sea.
The participation for the first time of a Turkish Coast Guard ship, together with the forces and assets of Romania and Bulgaria, is an important step in deepening regional cooperation in the field of maritime border security and countering cross-border crime in the Black Sea region, the Border Police said.
The exercise contributed to increasing the readiness and interoperability of the participating structures and to the development of effective international cooperation in protecting the external sea borders of the European Union and countering cross-border crime, the Border Police added.
Since the end of 2024, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkiye have also participated in a group for joint clearance of floating mines in the Black Sea.
