Balgarianovinite.com During the Three Seas Business Forum in Dubrovnik on April 28 and 29, Bulgaria presented its initiative, supported by Romania, Greece, Ukraine, and Moldova, for strategic support from the European Commission (EC) for the development of the Vertical Gas Corridor, the Energy Ministry said here on Wednesday. Bulgaria was represented by Deputy Energy Minister Teodora Georgieva, who highlighted the project’s vital importance for Europe’s long-term energy security and for ensuring diversified, reliable, and competitive natural gas supply routes.
In a letter to European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen, the countries highlight two key measures for the project’s competitiveness: accelerated infrastructure development and regulatory support to enable more efficient use of the south-north route.
The first measure calls for Bulgaria to double the capacity of the Vertical Gas Corridor – proactively and in response to the changing geopolitical environment. The Bulgarian government confirmed that the project will be implemented on an accelerated timeline to ensure sustainable supplies and provide a real alternative to Russian gas in line with the objectives of the REPowerEU plan.
The corridor partners support Bulgaria’s proposal that the EC establish a special infrastructure financing mechanism to assist the countries that carry the heaviest burden from the shifting gas flows and new regulatory requirements.
The second step is the introduction of the so-called super-bundled capacity booking products, which will provide predictability for long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG), allowing for the integration of large volumes of LNG from diversified sources, including the US, ensuring the route’s competitiveness, and transforming it into a stable platform for significant LNG flows during the period of accelerated reduction in Russian gas.
“We must find innovative ways and adapt regulations to promote security and competitiveness. The Vertical Gas Corridor is a strategic infrastructure of European significance, enabling real diversification of supplies and the integration of LNG into the energy systems of Southeast and Central Europe,” Georgieva said.
Within the framework of the forum, the Deputy Minister participated in the energy discussion on the development of energy corridors in the Three Seas region, alongside Director-General for Energy at the EC Ditte Jorgensen, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and US Special Envoy for Energy Integration Joshua Volz.
