Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria received its first payment of EUR 489.3 million under the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument on Friday, the European Commission said in a press release.
The payment represents 15% of the EUR 3.3 billion in SAFE funding allocated to Bulgaria.
Latvia also received its first payment under the instrument on Friday, amounting to EUR 524.7 million out of a total allocation of EUR 3.5 billion.
SAFE is a EUR 150 billion financial instrument providing loans to EU Member States to support defence investment, primarily through joint procurement. It covers areas including ammunition, missiles, air defence systems and ground combat systems produced in the EU.
The instrument is part of the European Commission’s ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030 plan, which aims to mobilize more than EUR 800 billion in defence investment across the EU.
European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius said the first SAFE payments would help Bulgaria and Latvia accelerate key defence investments while strengthening their preparedness and resilience. He said the EU was moving quickly to support Member States on its eastern flank and enable more efficient joint procurement and investment in Europe’s defence industrial base.
The Commission said further payments will be made as agreed milestones are met and implementation progresses.
