Balgarianovinite.com Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev held an online meeting with Radu-Dinel Miruta, Romania’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defence and caretaker Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, and Aleksandra Sofronijevic, Serbia’s Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, the Bulgarian Transport Ministry said on Friday.
The meeting, initiated by Peev, focused on upcoming railway infrastructure works in Serbia and Romania and their potential impact on international rail traffic. Deputy Transport and Communications Ministers Tsveta Timeva and Hristina Velinova also took part in the meeting.
Serbia plans to close the Nis–Dimitrovgrad railway section for approximately 200 days starting in September 2026. In Romania, rail traffic along the Giurgiu North–Ruse route is expected to be completely suspended from April through December 2027. The Bulgarian side expressed concern that simultaneous restrictions on the two routes could have a serious impact on freight flows between Central Europe, the Balkans and Turkiye.
Peev noted that Bulgarian railway operators have already voiced concerns about the consequences of the planned restrictions and the need to identify viable alternative routes.
“Maintaining rail connectivity with Serbia and Romania is of strategic importance to Bulgaria. The repair works need to be coordinated in a way that ensures maximum continuity of international traffic,” Peev said. As one possible solution, he proposed allocating designated time slots for freight trains in advance, which would avoid a complete suspension of rail traffic.
The three countries agreed that discussions should continue at the level of the management teams of their respective railway infrastructure companies. The talks will focus on specific operational solutions for coordinating the repair works and making the best use of available capacity, with the aim of minimizing the adverse impact on cross-border rail traffic.
