Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria is in talks with sensor manufacturers about upgrading the weigh stations used to monitor heavy-goods traffic by the end of 2026. The aim is to position the weigh stations before roadside pull-off areas so that, if a dangerous tire is detected, the truck can be immediately diverted and stopped by law enforcement officers, National Toll Administration Director Oleg Asenov said in an interview with bTV on Saturday.
“We are currently in talks with a sensor manufacturer that offers more detailed tire analysis, and we hope to have the first weigh stations equipped with this type of sensor by the end of the year,” Asenov said. He explained that the sensors embedded in the road surface at the weigh stations can perform point-by-point pressure analysis. This makes it possible to detect tires with improper geometry, insufficient tread depth, as well as uneven or declining tire pressure, he said.
The weigh stations are more than eight years old, while regulations call for them to be replaced every five years, Asenov said. He added that a comprehensive inventory conducted a year and a half ago found that 30% of the weigh stations were worn out. At present, 70% of the stations have been restored to operational readiness, while 20 have been fully certified, with the certification process still ongoing.
More than EUR 1.5 million in fines for overloaded heavy trucks have been collected since the beginning of the year through the 20 weigh stations, Asenov added. Total revenue from road tolls and fines has exceeded EUR 12 million, while the National Toll Administration has reported a more than 12% increase in toll revenue.
Regarding the 30% increase in e-vignette prices effective August 1, 2026, Asenov explained that the rates had not been updated for almost 10 years. During that period, inflation had accumulated and road maintenance costs had increased, he said, assuring drivers that there would be no problems purchasing e-vignettes, saying the automated system had been tested and was ready to implement the new prices from midnight on August 1 without technical difficulties.
Regarding average-speed enforcement, Asenov said that 9,064 violations had been recorded over the previous 10 days, an average of around 900 per day. According to him, this represents a sharp increase from the usual 200-300 violations per day, which he attributed to heavier summer traffic and favourable weather conditions.
Among the most serious violations, Asenov cited a case on the Harmanli – Lyubimets section of the Maritsa Motorway, where an average speed of 215 km/h was recorded. On some peak sections, instantaneous speeds exceeded 260 km/h. Since the beginning of 2026, 971 cases of driving without a seat belt have been detected on the interurban road network, with the highest number recorded in March.
Regarding plans to establish a unified road-safety structure and a single road-safety authority, Asenov said work was underway to consolidate the information infrastructure used by various institutions, including the Interior Ministry and the National Toll Administration, and to establish a unified control body. He said the working group is expected to submit its first proposals for consolidating data and developing the organizational structure by end-August.
