Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) will prepare a large-scale three-year programme to mark upcoming historical anniversaries, BAS Corresponding Member Prof. Atanas Semov said in Vratsa on Thursday. He was speaking at the presentation of the new issue of Botev List, the oldest periodical jubilee publication in Bulgaria dedicated to Hristo Botev, which has been published without interruption since 1878.
The Academy’s programme will include 190 years since the birth of Vasil Levski in 2027, 150 years since Bulgaria’s Liberation in 2028, and 150 years since the adoption of the Tarnovo Constitution in 2029, among others.
“After the disgrace of the nearly failed organization of the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, we will not allow another such case, and we are starting preparations now,” Semov said. According to him, a major scientific conference dedicated to Vasil Levski will also be organized in 2027. Semov described as “a cause for shame” the fact that the State had nearly failed to organize the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.
“At the last moment, once again, we, the people, not the institutions, at least not the political institutions whose job this is, had to take matters into our own hands. BAS prepared a national calendar, set up a national initiative committee and contributed to ensuring that there was a nationwide commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising,” Semov said, adding that it is extremely important to emphasize the nationwide character of the uprising.
“This was not an uprising by a handful of rebels swept along by Georgi Benkovski’s extraordinary charisma,” he said, criticizing the way historical events are presented in textbooks. He expressed hope that, in the person of Georgi Valchev, Bulgaria has an Education Minister who will be able to carry through the changes to curricula.
“For 12 years I have been fighting to bring Bulgaria back into Bulgarian schools,” Semov said. According to him, the curricula in the subjects that shape children’s personalities should be “radically revised” – Bulgarian language and literature, history, geography, Man and Society, and World and Personality.
“The primary task of school education is to create personalities and citizens of the homeland, and of course citizens of Europe. This means people who know their past, but also their constitutional rights and are able to defend them,” he said.
Semov also said that despite “the many examples of a fading spirit”, around the commemorations of the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising he had seen “hundreds of hearths and thousands of people” in community centres, museums, schools and patriotic organizations who preserve the memory of the heroes.
“They ran away from the Ottoman police to bring freedom to Bulgaria; today Bulgarians are running away from free Bulgaria because they do not believe they can live well enough here,” Semov said, adding that Bulgarians should be ashamed of what they have done over the past 37 years.
