Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria highly values the key role of the Bulgarian community in Ukraine as a natural bridge between the two peoples, with the Bulgarians of Bolhrad and the Bolhrad district holding an important place within that community, Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Ukraine Zlatin Krustev said at celebrations marking the 205th anniversary of the city’s founding on Tuesday.
He said her was honoured to be at the anniversary observances and added that Bolhrad “holds a special place in the heart of every Bulgarian, both those living there as worthy citizens of Ukraine and those living in Bulgaria or carrying their Bulgarian identity around the world”.
Founded by Bulgarian settlers in 1821, the city has retained to this day the qualities of its founders, including dignity, honour, patriotism and exceptional industriousness, the Ambassador said. Official statistics, he added, provide grounds to believe that more than half of the city’s residents are ethnic Bulgarians or have Bulgarian roots. “All this gives grounds for the city to be regarded as the unofficial capital of the Bulgarians of Bessarabia,” Krustev said.
Bolhrad is also home to the Sts Cyril and Methodius Bolhrad Gymnasium, which opened in 1858 and now bears the name of the great Bulgarian revolutionary, philosopher and writer Georgi Rakovski. “At this centre of the Bulgarian spirit, many outstanding figures in Bulgarian history received their education and went on to make an indelible contribution to the country’s development and its worthy destiny,” Krustev said. He cited among the school’s alumni Alexandar Teodorov-Balan, the first rector of Sofia University, and Alexandar Malinov, who was Bulgaria’s prime minister when the country declared its independence in 1908.
